Early Life and Career

Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in New York City on September 16, 1924. Her mother, Natalie Weinstein-Bacall, was a secretary, and her father, William Perske, was a salesman. Bacall's parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother in a modest apartment in the Bronx.

Bacall began her career as a model at the age of 16. She was discovered by fashion editor Diana Vreeland, who featured her in a spread in Harper's Bazaar magazine. Bacall's striking beauty and distinctive voice soon caught the attention of Hollywood talent scouts.

Breakthrough Role and Stardom

In 1944, Bacall made her film debut in Howard Hawks' "To Have and Have Not." She starred opposite Humphrey Bogart, and the two quickly became one of Hollywood's most iconic couples. Bacall's performance in the film earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Bacall went on to star in several other classic films, including "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947), and "Key Largo" (1948). She was known for her sultry voice, smoky eyes, and independent spirit.

Marriage to Humphrey Bogart

Bacall and Bogart married in 1945. They had two children together, Stephen and Leslie. Bogart died of cancer in 1957, at the age of 57. Bacall was devastated by his death, but she continued to work in Hollywood.

Bacall continued to act in films and television throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She also wrote two autobiographies, "Lauren Bacall by Myself" (1978) and "Now" (1994).

Bacall died in New York City on August 12, 2014, at the age of 89. She is remembered as one of Hollywood's greatest stars and a true icon of the silver screen.
