Dengue Fever Outbreak in Bali: Travel Advisory and Precautions

Indonesian Authorities Issue Warning

The Bali regional government in Indonesia has issued a call to foreign tourists visiting the popular resort island, urging them to be cautious due to an outbreak of dengue fever.

Symptoms and Risks

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, it can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

Travel Advice

Australians who have recently visited Bali have advised travelers to be extra cautious and take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. These include:

  • Wearing long sleeves and pants
  • Using insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin
  • Staying in accommodation with air conditioning or mosquito nets

Vaccination and Prevention

The Indonesian Health Ministry has issued an early warning asking local and international travelers to get vaccinated against dengue fever before their trip. However, it's important to note that the vaccine is not 100% effective, so additional precautions are still necessary.

If you experience symptoms of dengue fever while in Bali, it's crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
