EU Parliament Votes to Ban Combustion Engines in New Cars From 2035

Significant Milestone in the fight against climate change

Effective End to Fossil Fuel-Powered Vehicles

The European Union (EU) Parliament has taken a historic step in its fight against climate change, voting to effectively ban the sale of new combustion engine cars by 2035. This decision marks a significant milestone in the automotive industry's transition to electric vehicles and renewable energy.

The new regulation, which was approved by a wide majority in the parliament, will require that all new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles sold in the EU emit zero CO2 emissions from 2035 onward. This effectively eliminates the sale of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, which have been the dominant mode of transportation for decades.

The decision comes as a major victory for environmentalists and climate activists, who have long advocated for the phasing out of combustion engines. Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and the shift to electric vehicles is seen as a crucial step in reducing emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The regulation also sets ambitious interim targets for reducing emissions. By 2030, carmakers will be required to reduce their average CO2 emissions by 55% for cars and 50% for vans compared to 2021 levels. This is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of zero emissions by 2035.

The new regulation is expected to have a major impact on the automotive industry. Carmakers will need to invest heavily in electric vehicle technology and infrastructure in order to meet the new targets. The transition is also likely to create new jobs in the clean energy sector, as the demand for electric vehicles and charging stations grows.
